The MRCS (ENT) OSCE is an intercollegiate examination, which tests the knowledge, clinical skills, communication and professional attributes that would be expected of a doctor joining an otolaryngology department as a trainee. 

This course focuses on Part 2 of the DOHNS examination which is an OSCE consisting of 30 stations. This is usually split into 5 manned 5 manned stations, 23 unmanned stations and 2 rest stations. Each station lasts 7 minutes, with the whole examination lasting approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes.

The manned stations are designed to assess clinical skills, history taking, examination and communication stations. These are manned by an examiner and by a patient (or actor playing the role of a patient).

The unmanned stations are stations where the candidate is presented with questions to be answered on a question/answer sheet. These stations allow for the assessment of:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Pathology/histology
  • Radiology
  • Audiometry
  • Otology
  • Rhinology
  • Head and neck and laryngology
  • Paediatrics
  • Written communication skills
  • Instruments

During these stations, candidates collect their question/answer sheets and place them in a provided folder, which they carry throughout the examination as they progress around the circuit. This is handed in at the end of the examination.
